Best Practices
Best Practices for Tools
Tools for collation, analysis, and visualization shape how scholars encounter textual variation. Their design choices affect which differences are visible, how results can be interpreted, and whether data and methods can move between projects.
The Best Practices subgroup brings scholars, developers, and designers together to identify practical recommendations for tools that analyse and visualize textual variation.
What we are working on
- Surveying the state of the art in collation, analysis, and visualization tools;
- Gathering use cases and requirements from researchers and developers;
- Reviewing interfaces, workflows, data exchange, and interoperability;
- Formulating functional recommendations and evaluation criteria;
- Exploring a minimal viable product that demonstrates the recommendations.
Principles
Our work is guided by the needs of diverse textual traditions and research questions. We are particularly interested in tools that are transparent about their methods, make scholarly interpretation possible, support interoperable data, and present complex variation in accessible ways.
Expected outcomes
The subgroup aims to produce:
- An overview of current tools for examining and visualizing textual variation;
- A practical guide for developers and project teams;
- A minimal viable product implementing core recommendations.
Get involved
The subgroup welcomes developers, textual scholars, editors, interface designers, and researchers who use or evaluate text-analysis tools. It is coordinated by Carlotta Defenu and Chiara Martignano.
